Children are Genesee County's most valuable resource. Unfortunately,
far too many children in Genesee County are experiencing poverty,
poor health, abuse and other negative outcomes that are often invisible
to most community leaders. Child Watch takes community leaders from
business, community service organizations, clergy and religious
organizations, human services, public officials and neighborhood
coalitions to locations that effectively present the issues children
deal with daily. The visits are designed to bring participants closer
with children and parents in the challenge of improving their quality
of life.
Child Watch visits are scheduled several times per year and recruit
leaders across Genesee County to participate. About 20-30 people
participate in each program. Individuals can attend a program or
arrange to have a Child Watch visit for members of a specific organization.
Priority Children hopes to create a sense of urgency about children's
needs and mobilize a climate for action. Participants will discern
action they may take to correct, prevent and alleviate the child
problems identified during the visit. Everyone can help! Participating
in a Child Watch visit is an easy way to get involved.
Child Watch topics have included issues of Juvenile Justice, Violence
Prevention, Educability, Domestic Violence, Child Abuse/Neglect,
Maternal/Child Health, Adolescents, Economic Security and Early
Childhood Development. Visits include presentations and information
from local agency representatives. Participants will learn about
the many resources and programs working to improve the situation
for children and families in Genesee County.
