Carrera Program

________________________________________________________________________________________________

On April 1, 2004, Priority Children assumed sponsorship of the Carrera Teen Pregnancy Prevention Flint Replication Program.

The Carrera Program, currently funded by the Ruth Mott Foundation, the Community Foundation of Greater Flint and the C.S. Mott Foundation (through the Children's Aid Society), began recruiting the 30 students currently involved in the program in 2003.

The Carrera Program is housed near Flint's Cultural Center and provides a variety of life enrichment opportunities for the students and families partipating in the program:

Health Benefits: Every child in the program will have free medical and dental care.

Education: Each child will have an individual academic plan, daily one-on-one or small group tutoring, ACT and SAT preparation, regular usage of the Flint Public Library, and college trips.

Employment: Called Job Club, a full introduction to the “world of work.” Students will open bank accounts, receive stipends for attending Job Club, and participate in summer and part-time jobs.

Lifetime Individual Sports: Emphasizing sports that build self-discipline and impulse control and can be played throughout life; golf, tennis, and swimming are some.

Creative Self Expression: Weekly music, dance, writing and/or drama workshops, led by theater and art professionals, where children can discover talents and build self-esteem by developing their individual gift.

Family Life Education: Family life education classes are offered to the children and parents of the children.

Mental Health: Counseling and crisis intervention as needed, and weekly discussions groups led by certified social work staff.
